Understanding the XP Series concept
The XP series by Liteboat offers a unique dual-mode boating experience: you can row when the wind is calm and sail when it picks up. Designed by naval architect Sam Manuard, these boats combine lightness, efficiency, and ergonomics in both disciplines. The rowing system is fully removable, allowing seamless transition to sailing, while the simple “cat-boat” rig ensures easy yet effective handling. The XP boats are designed for adventure, whether it’s a quiet day on a river or a longer coastal expedition.
The XP20: an adventure-ready cruiser
At six meters long with a beam of 1.8 meters, the XP20 is the larger and more capable model of the range. Weighing 150 kilograms, it strikes a balance between manageability and robustness. Its defining feature is a small cabin that offers sleeping space for two people along with ample storage capacity, making it particularly well suited for multi-day trips.
For sailors, the boat is equipped with a ten-square-meter mainsail designed by North Sails, with the option of adding an eleven-square-meter gennaker for more downwind power. The rig includes a seven-meter, two-piece carbon mast, a removable rudder, and a liftable, weighted centerboard. Rowers will appreciate the carefully thought-out design of the sliding seat, footstretchers, and carbon oars, which allows comfortable rowing when needed.
On the water, the XP20 offers safety and reliability: it is unsinkable and is designed to self-right in case of capsize. Under sail, it is capable of reaching impressive downwind speeds of up to fifteen knots. Altogether, the XP20 is a versatile small cruiser that opens the door to coastal expeditions, beach landings, and overnight adventures with comfort and autonomy.
The XP16: a lightweight explorer
The XP16 is the more compact sibling, measuring five meters in length and 1.4 meters in beam, with a much lighter weight of just 100 kilograms. Unlike the XP20, it does not include a cabin. Instead, it emphasizes simplicity and ease of use, encouraging light travel and adventures where overnight shelter is handled with a tent or beach camping. Storage is still abundant thanks to large watertight compartments and a forward hatch, which keep equipment dry and secure.
For sailing, the XP16 carries a 7.5-square-meter mainsail, with the option to add a six-square-meter gennaker. Its 2-sections carbon mast is 5.4 meters tall, and the setup includes a liftable daggerboard and a removable rudder, ensuring easy rigging and handling. The rowing arrangement is similar in quality to the XP20, with a sliding seat, carbon oars, and comfortable footstretchers. Lighter than the XP20, it’s a real pleasure to row on this boat, and if you want to enjoy even better rowing feelings, you can just take of the mast! A notable addition, however, is a passenger bench that allows for face-to-face rowing, making this boat ideal for outings with company.
Despite its smaller size, the XP16 is every bit as seaworthy as its larger counterpart. It can also reach exciting speeds under sail, up to fifteen knots in favorable conditions. What sets it apart is its lightness and accessibility: it is easy to transport, quick to rig, and perfect for spontaneous river or coastal outings, or for campers looking for a practical “tow-and-go” sailing dinghy.
Which one to choose?
The choice between the XP20 and the XP16 depends less on performance—since both share remarkable versatility and speed—and more on your style of adventure. If you dream of longer trips, overnight stays, and the convenience of an onboard cabin, the XP20 is the natural choice. It is a true micro-cruiser designed to provide autonomy and comfort over several days. On the other hand, if you favor lightness, simplicity, rowing pleasure and the freedom to head out at a moment’s notice, the XP16 is ideal. Its compact form and straightforward design make it a reliable partner for day trips, short coastal voyages, or camping adventures.
